Gilberts Gazette

MY competitive year has become a little sparse toward the end this time (grrrr). The lack of a World Open and World Masters weekend is a great disappointment but it does not mean that I have been resting on my laurels.

My final ‘tour’ effort of 2023 was a return to Ireland for the Killarney festival in November. This one of my favourite events on the calendar, it combines a great time with lots of events and a very high standard. It’s one of those events that anyone can really enjoy. Although I would have liked better overall results, defeat to Rhian O’Sullivan and Denise Cassidy, in the main events, who are both playing well is no disgrace.

Returning to the Warwickshire UKDA side, after missing a match whilst in Malta last month, was a nice place to start the festive period. I even managed a ‘Lady of the Match’ effort and a 24.27 average. Our Women’s B side managed a 5-1 win to contribute to the cause.

As well as some open competitions I was delighted to attend the 2023 Lakeside event as the guest of Kirsty Hutchinson during her campaign. I had the pleasure to support her through the highs and the lows over the week and was very proud of her efforts. Defeat is always tough to take but it’s often also the source of motivation.

I had been to Lakeside as a spectator before, and it’s on my list of things to achieve as a player, but this time I was able to watch any match from any session and got a much better overall feel for the event. Performances were very mixed with some fabulous performances and some that really didn’t live up to their potential. It must be that old stage and the weight of history that does it?

We could see another moment to remember at the Alexandra Palace. Both Fallon and Mikuru have been handed winnable, although awkward, ties. Could another run be on the cards?

I hope you are all looking forward to the Christmas break  and the rest, relaxation and family time that can come with it. Personally I shall be grateful for a little time with less travelling and some quality time with my nearest and dearest.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year, I hope to see you in 2024!
